- For use on X330, X350, X354, and X370 Tractors
Excellent cut quality
Deep mower-deck stamping gives excellent cut quality. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck without getting recut:
- Reducing the amount of recutting enables more power to be used to cut incoming grass, which greatly improves mower capacity.
- Helps maintain excellent cut quality at faster mowing speeds
- Clean flow of material out of discharge area prevents cut material from interfering with cutting the incoming grass, making it possible for the blades to cut incoming material cleanly.
- Even in mulching mode, cut evenness is improved compared to other designs because the additional depth allows for continuous circulation, optimal recutting, and an even distribution of clippings.
- Exact Adjust deck-leveling system allows for easy and accurate leveling of the mower deck
Productivity - gets the job done fast
Deep mower-deck stamping gives high productivity, which gets the job done fast. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck quickly, reducing the amount of recutting so more power is available to process incoming grass:
- Greatly improves mowers capacity to maintain excellent mowing performance in difficult mowing conditions and at higher speeds
Large discharge opening is both high and wide to handle more material:
- Gives a smooth, even discharge of clippings at all mowing speeds
- Reduces the chance of plugging, especially important when operating in wet, thick, or dense grass and when bagging
- Cut-and-throw chute has a large, optimized inlet which aids in collecting material by using airflow from the large deck opening
Cleanliness - for the mower and the operator
The flat-top shape of the deck stamping is optimal for keeping itself and the operator clean:
- There are few places to catch and hold material on top and underneath the deck.
- Top of deck stays cleaner, reducing time and effort needed for cleaning and service
- Underside of deck is self-cleaning to maintain optimum performance without buildup of material to interfere with the flow of air and clippings
- Less need to clean and remove buildup of material from underside deck
- The depth of the Accel Deep mower deck minimizes the amount of material that escapes from the front of the deck
- Limited amount of material to drift onto the operator and mower deck
- Even flow of material discharged out the chute, less recutting results in larger pieces that are less likely to end up on the operator
- Mulching prevents the discharge of material completely and MulchControl makes mulching a practical solution for most mowing situations.
Cleaning a mower deck, both top and bottom, is one of the most frequent maintenance activities:
- The flat-top design reduces places for material to build up and makes material that does collect easy to remove.
A wash port is provided to make cleaning the underside of the mower deck easy.
- Hose connector is included with the mower deck.
Superior durability is designed in
The 42A Mower Deck has strong spindle pockets to keep the blades aligned, even after years of tough service:
- Ribs in the deck shell add strength where it is needed.
- The 42A has a 16 percent heavier overall weight than the Edge™ Xtra 42-in. (107-cm) Mower Deck.
Mower wheels are double captured:
- Provides greater strength and durability for longer, trouble-free life.
- Single-bolt adjustment makes setting wheels to the correct height for the cutting height quick and easy.
Low-tension belt-drive design reduces the side load on the engines lower bearing and mower deck bearings for longer life.
Rolled outer edge of the deck provides extra strength and protection.
Dual-stage E-coat and powder-paint coatings provide extra protection from rust.Versatility - easy to change between side discharge, mulch, and bagging modes
The 42A Mower Deck is designed for maximum versatility, providing the greatest ease in changing from one mower discharge mode to another:
- With an optional MulchControl system installed (along with the special mulching blades), changing from side discharging to mulching or vice versa is done with the simple flip of a lever or push of an electric switch.
- The cut-and-throw rear bagger can be used with MulchControl by removing the rear MulchControl baffle (A) before installing the bagger chute. The baffle is held in place with two carriage bolts. To return to mulching, the chute needs to be removed and the baffle replaced.
7-bu (247-L) rear bagger
An optional 7-bu (247-L) cut-and-throw rear bagger material collection system (MCS) is available for use with the 42-in. (107-cm) Accel Deep Mower. It provides an efficient means of collecting grass clippings and leaves.

MulchControl™ system provides superior mulching performance and rapid conversion
The optional MulchControl system makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching, but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:
- Creates a beautiful looking lawn
- Smaller grass clippings disappear into the lawn canopy
- Reduces fertilizer needs
- Grass clippings are not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
- No need to dispose of bags of clippings
How MulchControl works
MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:
- The MulchControl system includes an adjustable MulchControl baffle near the discharge chute and fixed baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
- The MulchControl handle, or an electric one-touch actuator, is on top of the mower deck and is used to open and close the MulchControl baffle.
- When the MulchControl baffle is open, most of the material flows freely out the discharge deflector or into a material collection system.
- When the MulchControl baffle is closed, material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.
MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:
- For operators who usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
- For operators who usually side discharge, but would like to close the chute to control clippings in some areas
- For operators who always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
- For operators who collect clippings but want to go farther before emptying the material collection system
MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings.
Electric one-touch MulchControl
Electric one-touch MulchControl systems shift the MulchControl baffle using an electric actuator that is operated by a dash-mounted switch.
Operators can convert between modes without interrupting the mowing process, making it possible to change between modes:
- When approaching driveways or flower beds where clippings would be undesirable
- When a breeze blows clippings back onto the operator
- For side discharge mowing only the areas of the property where grass is too thick for mulching
- With 48A and 54A Mower Decks, for collecting only the areas of the property where grass is too tall or thick for mulching
MulchControl limitations
While in the side discharge mode, MulchControl still mulches about one third of the material. Therefore, the side discharge mode is essentially a partial mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:
- When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
- When cutting in wet, high growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
- When optimum bagging and lawn cleanup is desired
- 42A Mower Deck requires a MulchControl baffle be removed to install the bagger chute
When bagging with MulchControl on a 48A or 54A mower deck, the MulchControl baffle can be opened or closed with the Power Flow™ blower installed. The Power Flow blower runs without material when the baffle is closed.
When bagging with MulchControl on a 42A mower deck, the cut-and-throw rear bagger can be used with the MulchControl blades. However, the rear MulchControl baffle (A) needs to be removed to install the bagger chute. The baffle is held in place with two carriage bolts. To return to mulching, the chute needs to be removed and the baffle replaced.
MulchControl compatibility
Each MulchControl system is an optional field-installed attachment and includes everything needed: baffles, mulch blades, a handle (lever action attachments) or an actuator, wiring, and switches (electric one-touch attachments).

- Exact Adjust ports on the fender deck allow for easy and accurate leveling of the mower deck for optimum mowing performance.
Deck-leveling gauge is placed at the appropriate location under the left rear, right rear, and front of the mower deck as the cut height is adjusted using the Exact Adjust tool and front draft arm adjusting nuts.
Foot-pedal lift system
Pushing with the foot to raise the mower or implement is less strenuous for many operators than using a hand-lift lever:
- The easy-to-use raised position lock operates similarly to the park brake lock.
- The foot pedal is out of the way and not likely to catch on bushes and tree limbs when mowing.
- The mower deck returns to the same preset height each time it is lowered.
Adjustable lift-assist spring
NOTE: The adjustable lift-assist spring is standard equipment on tractors with manual foot-lift system that are shipped with the 48-in. (122-cm) and 54-in. (137-cm) side-discharge mowers, and an option for tractors shipped with 42-in. (107-cm) mowers. It is a recommended option for foot-lift tractors sold with the 42-in. (107-cm) mulch mower.
- Lift-assist spring is provided on tractors shipped from the factory with a 48-in. (122-cm) or 54-in. (137-cm) side-discharge mower deck, except models with hydraulic lift, and a recommended option for tractors equipped with a 42-in. (107-cm) mulch mower to minimize lift effort.
-
A spring-assist kit is available for other models for use with front equipment.
-
-
Lift effort can be easily adjusted by turning a bolt, located on the tractor front bumper, for optimum performance, depending on the equipment used (mower, front blade, snow blower, etc.).
-
The mower will not be inadvertently locked in the raised position when mowing through ditches.
-
When installing or removing a mower or front equipment raised by the foot-lift system, spring tension may be removed from the connection points by pulling rearward on the lift pedal and raising the lift latch to hold the pedal in the rearward position.
Parking brake control
Depressing the brake pedal applies internal wet-disk brakes, which provide better reliability and longer life than external brakes, for safe stopping.
The parking brake control is conveniently located for easy access. It holds the brake pedal securely in the locked position.Electric PTO clutch is easy and convenient to use
The heavy-duty electric PTO clutch is operated with a convenient dash-mounted switch.
Heavy-duty PTO clutch
The PTO clutch is designed to operate through many on/off cycles.
RIO
Using RIO
CAUTION: Children or bystanders may be injured by rotating blades. Before traveling forward or rearward:
- Carefully check the area around the machine.
- Disengage the mower before backing up.
NOTE: Operating the mower while backing up is strongly discouraged. RIO should be used only when operating another attachment or when the operator deems it necessary to reposition the machine with the mower engaged.
- Stop forward travel. Allow attachment to run.
- Look down and behind the machine to be sure that there are no bystanders.
- Push and hold in the reverse implement switch while depressing the reverse pedal slightly.
NOTE: If the attachment stops while positioning the machine, return mower engagement (PTO) switch to off position. Repeat this procedure from the beginning. - Release the reverse implement switch and reposition the machine as the machine begins to move rearward.
- Resume forward travel. The attachment should continue operating.
- Repeat procedure to position the machine again.

Traction on sloped hills.is terrible.
I have been using this mower this year for the 1st time and cannot get rear wheel traction on a angled slope making for a difficult experience. I'm probably going to have to put tractor tires on it. The 125 JD I have travels up the hill with no loss of.traction. The X330 is big on safety and ease of operation, but performance is not so good for.the price paid.

John Deere did it again!!
This is my second review after my initial purchase. Wow, what a great mower!! The 20 hp Briggs engine is so powerful and quiet. The engine never once bogged down. Once you activate the mower deck, you can tell that it is all business from there. The RIO button on the dash is very easy to get used to. I mowed 4 acres over the weekend and it just became second nature to push the button without thinking about it. The mower steers easily, the 42" deck mows beautifully and the grass dispersal from the chute is incredible with no clumping grass. The new 5" deck is great with a huge opening for the grass discharge and there is very little grass that accumulates on top of the deck. I mowed a relatively steep ditch, leaned to the light side and it did fine. The ergonomics of this mower is second to none. I wasn't even tired after mowing the 4 acres. The dash instrument cluster is very nice and the backlighted screen is very nice. Once you are low on fuel, not only can you tell by the fuel gauge, but a gas pump begins flashing and an amber light illuminates. The mower can mow fast without skipping a beat. This mower is definitely worth the extra dollars to upgrade from the D series or the S240 sport. Not saying they aren't good mowers, but the new 300 series are awesome.

bullet proof
Have had mine for 2 years now. Great unit if your yard is flat. This is not a complaint. I have 5 acres on the side of a hill and when going at an uphill angle the uphill tire will lose traction. Not a fault, just not locking or limited slip. I am trading up to a X580 to get the traction assist. The only issue I had is the transaxle went out at 130 hours/21 months and was replaced under warranty. This was caused by the demands I placed on a unit not made for the heavy duty usage. I hauled tons of rocks and firewood, graded and plowed my driveway also uphill. Even with 5 acres if your yard is flat I highly recommend this unit. Easy to use and maintain. The 300 series has 4 year warranty.

Easy to use, smooth ride, easy to maintain.
Purchased about two months ago and really love cutting my grass for a change. Everything is easy on this mower. I do find the wash mechanism for the mower deck ineffective in that it does not seem to get the under deck clean. A service person at my point of purchase told me not to use it; felt that the cold water would damage bearings.

Great mower. The mulch control is great.
I cannot believe how smooth and quiet this is compared to the 100 series. The electric mulch control is a must have.

Bagger performance with leaves is poor.
The woven bags might be fine with grass, but picking up the fall leaves makes such a dust cloud I needed a mask. Using plastic bag inserts has helped but just adds to the emptying time. Solid bins would be a great improvement both for dust and time spent emptying. I had a 3 bagger from Sears that I used for over 10 years, and with the plastic bins only seconds were necessary to empty them.

It's much bigger than my old STX38
The 21 year old STX38 had to be replaced. It was looking to get $1000-1500 in repair costs so I decided to upgrade to a new one. The smaller JD lawn mowers are now all BIg Box store quality (junk) so I moved up to the x330. This is a mighty fine lawn tractor/mower. The electronic gauges are nice and it mows fine. It's so big I had to rearrange my garage and give a few things away to fit it in. If I had a larger yard, I would probably love this new machine. I wish that JD still made something in the size and quality of the STX38.

Cheap plastic x300
Bought in 2017. 142 hours. Wind blew hood closed while doing maint. Shattered into 18 pieces. They want arm and leg for new hood, piece of cheap molded plastic. Plastic throttle and choke levers both broke off. Deck is easily bent (root) causing stair step cut. For a high dollar mower it is poor quality. Had better service with a 30" Murray rear engine mower that lasted me 10 years. I will never buy John Deere again. Overrated.

Fantastic value for cost
This is my second John Deere--upgraded from 2006 155C. The X330 is a tremendous mower--plenty of power, very easy to steer, and starts immediately! I highly recommend this product-- you will not be sorry to spend the extra dollars to move up to this model from the 100 series or the S240.

A fine mowerl that exceeded the challenge and accomplished the job!
I live in a hilly area and a riding mower is put to the challenge on my terrain. The X 330 I purchased from Hutson John Deere of Russellville, Kentucky has met the challenge and actually exceeded my expectations. The mower is comfortable riding, quiet, powerful and very smooth operating while providing a great cut to the grass. I would recommend this mower to anyone who is looking for a QUALITY mower that will get the job done quickly, efficiently, safely and provide many years of service!

Not recommended
Pros: Turns nice, cuts lawn evenly, relatively fast machine Cons: It on a grade it slides or doesn't make it up the hill. Has to have someone under 200 pounds on the unit or it will slide, doesn't have the guts for a $3000 unit Attachments: The snow blower is virtually useless. I have a flat driveway, even with chains and 100 pounds of extra weight the unit slides, get stuck or cannot do the job. If it is wet snow I honestly have to pull out my old snowblower to do the job. Overall: Not recommended.

Excellent upgrade from my old JD 135
The newly designed deck does an excellent job disbursing clippings. Goes through tall grass without missing a beat. Like the foot pedal for raising the deck. Bought the deck mulch kit so I can cut around beds without getting clippings on them. It was easy to install and is easy to use. The X330 has a good solid feel, lots of power, easy to steer, and a comfortable seat. Controls are easy to use. I have hills and trees to cut around, it handles the hills with no problem, and does a good job maneuvering around trees and beds. Also like the gas gauge display. I would highly recommend this mower, it is a good value for the money, easy to use, and should last many years.

Best deal I found.
When I was shopping for a new mower, I checked out the others but found nothing that could compare to the JD. The dealer delivered the unit to my house, walked me through the features, and even helped me set up the deck height for my yard. This was the best customer service experience I've ever had. I look forward to many years of use, best money I've ever spent.

Proud of My New Mower
I have a total of 5 hours on the mower and am very happy with my purchase. It is very easy to operate, the turning radius is tight, is a little heavier and rides better than previous mowers, and the quality surpasses my previous mowers. The gas gauge is a nice feature as is the digital "dashboard". I mow different parts of my lawn at different heights and the ease of changing the deck height is nice. The seat does not have to be raised to fill the gas tank. I'm proud of my new Deere because in the South you are not a true Southerner unless you own a John Deere.

Excellent smooth running machine
I purchased my x300 42 inch deck through the JD dealer in Bowling Green, Ky. Had known someone there for a long time, and he was of great help to me. If you buy, get the mulch kit. With patience, you can mount yourself. whether manual, or electric option, the kit really makes you smile. I have always mulched, and this works so well!! I stopped raking leaves in 1985, and chewing them up and feeding your lawn, and leaving a"golf course" look", is hard to beat! I live on a hill, and have never had an issue of sliding. However, I only mulch when the grass is dry--people who either cut or mulch, are kidding themselves when they do it in wet grass.

Well Built has a great cut
X330 with 42" deck is very well built, very easy to steer, and the deck gives a very nice cut. I purchased the mulch kit and installed it myself. Engine is smooth and quiet. When it works it is a good mower
We bought this mower a month ago. At the moment we have been able to mow our yard one time. The first time we used the mower, one of the springs that held the belts in place was not secured and the belts came loose within 20 minutes of use. Called the place, they came and picked it up. Finally mowed the yard one time. Left for vacation, came home started the mower. Engaged the blades, nothing happened, the belts started smoking. It was picked up again last week. Our yard is not huge, but for elderly it is more yard than we can do with a push mower. When John Deere picked up the mower it had 4 hours running time on it and maybe a month old. When purchasing this mower I specifically asked if there would be an issue with the belts on this mower as I had read that was an issue with the cheaper mowers. I was assured there would be no issues with the high priced mower. Now with only 4 hours of use, and probably half of that was in the shop getting it repaired, it is now back in the shop for a second repair for the same belt issues. So at the moment we are not a happy camper with this mower.

Awesome mower
This is the first John Deere mower I have owned. This thing is Awesome. I bought it now a year and a couple weeks ago. I mowed with it all spring, summer, and fall. I have now blown snow with it all winter. No problems or regrets. It has plenty of power. I would recommend this mower to any one. I currently have 145hrs. on it and still running strong. Now thinking or trading up to a 380. The spring assist is very helpful when the 44inch blower is attached. I love this unit. Thinking now after a year I might need or like the 48inch deck better. Great job John Deere. Job well done. I do not have one complaint.

wow!
I had an old riding mower that was neglected on the maintenance (never changed the oil and the last time I even looked at it it was green…lol). So no surprise that it blew up/seized on the first mow this year. Enter, John Deere. It was a lil more money than I wanted to spend but offered more power and the financing made buying a lot easier to manage. This machine seems to cut the grass better than my old machine and definitely cuts faster. Now I just need to get the bagging system so I can be “that guy” with the manicured lawn. It’s absolutely worth the money and I’m looking forward to a long term (with proper maintenance) relationship with this mower.

Have to remow areas I've already cut
I am not altogether happy with the X330. The cut requires me to go back over it in several places as it unevenly cuts my grass. My old LT125 cut the grass better than this. Also, the cover on the dashboard gauge immediately got fogged over and seems to be permanently so.

Grass catcher for x330 42" mower is poorly designed
I just purchased an X330 with a grass bagger, even using the HiLift blades, it is not picking up all the dry grass, leaving large clumps of dead grass on the lawn. When looking at the design of the mower deck and grass bagger, there is a 4 to 5 inch space in front of where the grass chute is attached that collects grass before sending any up the chute; when you make a turn or go over uneven terrain, this grass under the deck drops outs in big clumps. This is a design flaw that should have an easy fix, but until there is a fix, I would not waste any money on purchasing the grass catcher system for the X330 tractor.

Excellent Riding Mower
I have had the X330 for about one full season now and I can't really say anything negative about it. This mower cuts fast, has plenty of power and cuts well (even with the mulch kit installed). Engine starts and runs flawlessly and all of the controls are easy to use. I only wish that it came with the traction assist like the 500 series tractors do for a steep bank that I have to mow.

The John Deere X330 doesn't disappoint
I just received my John Deere X330 on June 10, 2016. Wow am I impressed. No other mower can match up to the ergonomics of this mower. It is so comfortable and the new instrument panel is impressive. I had no worries about the Briggs and Stratton engine. It is quiet and has great power. The mower came to me detailed but I didn't want to mow with it yet because I wanted to get a good coat of wax on the tractor and the deck. I just waxed it and cleaned all the plastic and it looks great. I am rating it a 5 so far just due to how well made it is and how impressive it is. The buying experience through my local John Deere Dealer was flawless. Once I mow with it I will type up a new rating. Can't wait to mow with it. :)
