Protective zone around the operator is provided by the rollover protective structure (ROPS)
The spacious operator station has been designed for comfort, visibility, and ease of use:
- Getting on and off is easy with the flat operator platform.
- Convenient-to-use controls located close to the operator are color coded and designed for easy identification and operation.
The ROPS and seat belt work in conjunction to provide a protective zone around the operator:
- It reduces the operator’s risk of being crushed under the vehicle should it overturn.
- When used with the seatbelt, the ROPS can reduce the severity of injury in the event of a rollover.
- Use of the seat belt is recommended when operating with ROPS in the upright position.
Foldable ROPS and retractable seat belt are standard equipment:
- Position adjustment pins provide a good grip and make changing the angle of the ROPS easier.
- The ROPS can be pinned in an intermediate position to accommodate machines equipped with a material collection system.
- Under normal operation, the ROPS should be in the upright position.
- See Operator’s Manual for more information on ROPS.
- Door height of most garages will accommodate the machine with ROPS in the raised position.
- Easy-fold ROPS improves the ability to store the ZTrak™ mower in structures with a lower door opening.

Spindle assembly provides greater performance and reliability
On every John Deere ZTrak™ mower deck, there are three 1-in. (2.5-cm) spindles that are cold-forged and heat-treated for strength without bulk. The spindles are supported by precision ball bearings, providing great performance and reliability.
The spindle housing is made of aircraft-grade, ribbed cast aluminum on 48-in., 54-in., and 60-in. (122-cm, 137-cm, and 152-cm) decks, including Mulch On Demand™ configurations. This unique casting design embosses reinforcing gussets in the housing, which adds both strength and cooling surface area that stands up to commercial applications.
These spindles can be greased from the top and require no disassembly to reach. Grease channels provide lubrication to both bearings. -
Mower is easy to service with many accessible components
The design of the Z900 Series makes many service components reachable and easily accessible from the ground.
- Large, open engine compartment at the rear of the machine provides convenient servicing and ensures the engine heat is directed away from the operator.
Onboard maintenance chart
All ZTrak™ Mowers come with an onboard maintenance chart that is conveniently located inside the right-hand console. The service interval chart gives necessary service intervals.
Diagnostics
The hour meter shows the number of hours the machine is run when the key switch is in the on position. It only counts the hours the engine is actually running. Machine diagnostics are the first step of a monitoring system to help operators quickly diagnose common downtime issues. A trouble code light is included on the hour meter.
Use of the hour meter and service interval chart helps determine when the machine will need service.

- Wide-bend, large-diameter steering levers swing out easily for entry and exit from the operator platform.
Brake & Go starting system
The Brake & Go starting system is a John Deere exclusive. This feature makes the starting process on all ZTrak™ mowers easier, while also making it possible to remove two interlock switches from the machine.
The Brake & Go starting procedure helps a novice operator look and feel like a professional. To start the machine, the parking brake must be engaged. It does not matter whether the power take-off (PTO) switch is on or off, nor does it matter if the control levers are pulled in or in the out position.
As long as the parking brake is engaged, the machine will start. When the parking brake is applied, the control levers cannot be moved to the forward or reverse positions.Adjustable levers
The motion control levers have two height positions and can also be adjusted forward or rearward within the slotted holes. The levers should be adjusted so the operator can achieve a full range of control operation comfortably.
Tracking adjustment
The easy-to-turn (from-the-seat) tracking adjustment allows operators to keep their mowers straight and produce professional striping results.
Onboard storage and cup holder
Several storage areas are provided on the ZTrak machines. A convenient cup holder is also available.
Right-hand control panel
The controls are grouped together on the right console, providing one central location for key switch, throttle, PTO engagement, height-of-cut, diagnostics, and hour meter.
- Rocker-type PTO switch
- Height-of-cut knob with transport lock
- Key switch
- Hour meter
- Throttle
- Separate choke control
- Easy choke operation yields less fouling of plugs
Easy-to-operate height-of-cut adjustment enables on-the-go changes
An easy-to-use cutting-height lift system allows the operator to adjust the mower deck height with no tools and minimal effort. The easy-to-grip knob allows operators to dial in the desired height of cut (HOC).
Cutting height can be adjusted from approximately 1 in. to 5.5 in. (2.5 cm to 14 cm). Each increment on the knob adjusts the HOC approximately 0.25 in. (0.64 cm). The deck can also be raised and locked in a transport position to provide maximum ground clearance when moving the machine from one area to another.
The transport lock function allows the deck to be returned to the previous HOC after being in the transport position:- Use the foot-lift pedal to lift the deck and engage the transport lock.
- Rotate the knob to adjust from 1 in. to 5.5 in. (2.5 cm to 14 cm) in 0.25-in. (0.64 cm) increments.
This design increases productivity by allowing operators to change the cutting height without having to leave the seat.

Motor problems after only 41 hours.
This mower is well designed and cuts great. However, the ride is the worst of any mower I've ever used, but that's not my biggest gripe. The motor on it is just horrible. From day one it would randomly puke a huge cloud of blue smoke on startup. It will literally fill my garage with blue smoke. It doesn't matter how you start it or shut it off either (yes I've read the manual). Then last summer I was mowing along and all of the sudden the engine backfired and began running rough and was suddenly low on power. This was at only 41 hours on it. It spent half the summer going back and forth to be serviced. The fuel pump & spark plugs were replaced. The carb. rebuilt and then replaced. The governor spring was found to be in wrong hole and running 150rmp too slow. Nothing got it running quite right. Then the last 2 mowings of the season it got to where it wouldn't turn over. You would have to turn the motor by hand until it wasn't against the compression. Then it would crank over. The battery tested OK and the starter relay would engage with a strong thud. Not like the weak clicks you'd hear with a dead battery. However, to give it the benefit of the doubt I decided to buy a new battery, but not until the following season. So the first mow of this season I go get a new battery. Lo and behold the starter engaged with a resounding thud, but the motor wouldn't turn over. So I turn the motor over by hand so it's not in the compression stroke and voila, it cranks. I take the battery to be tested and again it tests good. So several mows into the season and it's failing to crank 75% of the time, it still doesn't have the power it had before I started having problems, and it doesn't sound right when it's running. It only has 75 hours on it now and this is just unacceptable out of JD.

This thing is built like a tank
We bought a brand new Z915e right out of the crate about 2 or 3 months ago. We have put about 15 hours on it, and it has not missed a beat. We mow grass twice as tall as we did with our old rider, in half the time. When we compare ours to competitive mowers, we agree that this thing is so much heavier built with so much more quality. The things we don't like about it is that the park brake is a little hard to engage/disengage. Don't know if it will correct itself over time or not. Another thing is that there is not enough storage space. We only use the cup holder, but if we did need storage space, we would need more of it. The last thing is that this thing is LOUD. We have Stihl headphones we use, and even with them, it is loud. Other than that this thing is a beast. Wouldn't trade it for any other mower.

awesome
First zero turn I have ever owned and I have to say i will never go back to a regular lawn tractor. This is definitely the best mower I have ever owned, the price and quality are worth it. I would recommend this mower to anyone, it cuts my lawn like a beast. I actually enjoy mowing again!!!

Repeat buyer
This is my second 915. I have a 2016 915b and 2017 915e both with the 60" decks. I use my mowers everyday commercially and have never had any issues with reliability, just routine maintenance. The ride is what you should expect with the standard seat, but does not "beat you up" by any means. The price is extremely competitive with other mowers. Power is more than adequate with the Kohler engine.

Awesome Machine
I have many lawn mowing accounts which required me to purchase a mower that'll withstand the demanding conditions that accompany mowing 20 - 30 jobs a day. My Z915e has performed above expectations - mowing thick, tall grass with ease while providing a clean/professional finish. It's also a tank - very solidly built.

Tough! Looks Good & works great!
I'm writing this view because I see so many saying that it's a "bad ride"...I have to disagree completely! I work in professional landscaping & use the Z930M 60" deck & the Z960 with the 72" deck ---both of those mowers had the fully adjustable suspension seat. For my personal use here at home...which is still about 11 acres--I bought the Z915E...and personally, I think the Z915E is the best ride! The other 2 tend to "bounce" me up in the air which as you know, will turn the blades off. I think it depends on the size of the operator. I am a 5'2" female weighing close to 130 pounds. I have the adjustment on the 930 & 960 at the lowest weight setting & it still just feels like I'm floating. IF I increase the weight adjustment...well, I'm flying off the seat with each bump. With the 915...I feel more like I'm laid back in my SS. I know there are issues with some having rider fatigue...but I've mowed days straight from early to dark with all of the 3 I've mentioned...and I still have to say for the ride...I like the 915 best. So, just wanted to point that out...if you're a large operator...maybe it makes a difference...if you're not...this is the best ride! If you're comparing mowing capabilities...I have the 60" deck on my 915 & 930 & I don't see ANY difference in operations at all (other than the seat)...the 960 with the 72" deck...mows faster, of course...BUT it lacks the ability for detailing. I use the 960 on those huge open spaces & the 930 or 915 for areas where I'll be going around a lot of trees, flowers, etc...as I think it provides a better detail & the smaller stripe looks best in smaller sized yards. I've mowed both commercial & residential yards...the 930 & 915 seems to be best on residential properties where the 960 works best on commercial properties...ALL 3 are GREAT in quality & performance & it just really comes back to price & the ride...which again...for my home use...the 915 won!

Best mower I've owned
Purchased this unit in spring of 2018, although it takes a little time to get used to it and you have to pay attention moreover a standard riding mower, once you get that aside, mowing time is greatly reduced. It's a solid machine, the Kohler engine is very reliable, I have owned two other brand mowers with a Kohler and not once have they given me any problems. As with any machine, regular maintenance and servicing is common sense and doing so will give you years of reliable service.

915e Why did I wait so long?
I just purchased a 915e from my local John Deere dealer. This is the first zero turn I have owned. I have always used JD riding mowers. While it does take some getting used with the zero turn, mowing time was so much quicker. I asked myself why I have waited so long. The quality of construction is very good. JD has a sale on these 915's and I couldn't pass it up. This mower will last me a long time!

Really a ROUGH RIDE
Have ridden many different brands of zero turn mowers. Have not ridden a "rougher riding" zero turn than this one. Only way I could recommend it is to definitely ADD an adjustable suspension seat for another $500+ or add the Tweel tires to cushion the ride. If you ride a zero turn for 5-6....8 hours a day....you'll be "Beat Up" after riding this one

Nice mower!
Other than a bit of rough ride this mower is perfect for my home needs. Mowing 6+ acres the 915e saves me time and produces a beautifully cut lawn. I traded my 800 series in for the 915e and am very satisfied with my trade in deal.

Deere Should Be Embarrassed to put their name on this
175 Hours. It's been in the shop multiple times for backfiring. Thank god my dealer keeps working on it under warranty. When that warranty is up I will be dumping this on some other sucker. If you got one that works...awesome. But I would never ever buy a mower with this brand of engine again. So far, ignition coils replaced, they removed the valve covers and found part of the breather reed in there. The most current problem is that it needs a new carb. Really, I've Kawasaki motors last for decades with never even changing a spark plug. All I can say is AVOID this mower at all costs!!!!!

Well build
I was raised on John Deere equipment. I do not farm anymore. But i was looking for new mower and had talked with a lot of people about buying a mower. Everyone i talked to said all your paying for is the name. Well i did a lot of shopping a round and did not look at John Deere. But one rainy day i did... and i am so glad i did. I have had mine for 3 years and it is the best mower i have ever bought. Now my neighbors wish they would have bought this mower.

Solid Mower
I've owned many mowers over the years and learned the hard way you get what you pay for. Seems most people buy this model because they are in the lawn care business and this is a good heavy duty commercial mower. I am a homeowner that lives on a farm and have quite a bit of property to mow. I'm big on reliability, maintenance, and performance. I will give you my take on all three. Reliability It starts the first crank every time. It probably helps that I treat my gas and also use a Mr. Funnel to strain the gas before it gets poured in the tank. Maintenance I love how the transaxles ARE NOT SEALED!!!! I wish JD would stop sealing all their transaxles. That is the main reason I bought this model is because you can actually service the transaxles without having to drop them out of the unit and split the case. All your typical maintenance items like spark plugs, oil filter, fuel filter, and air filter is easy to get to and maintain. Performance It is easy to operate but you need to be aware that the transaxles are very strong. When you turn it can damage the grass depending on how you run. You can be a little more gentle with the controls and it won't damage the grass near as bad or none at all. If you're moving up from a big box store z-turn then you will want to be extra cautious because this mower is way more powerful than what you're used to. It will pop a nice wheelie if you run it wide open (not recommended). I'm to understand these mowers have a tendency to throw a belt when you mow over limbs bigger than your thumb. Overall, I'm glad I bought this mower. Many people swear by Kawasaki engines over the Kohler. I've had both and my experience is they're about the same. I would not let the fact this has a Kohler engine instead of a Kawasaki sway your decision. Remember, it's all in how you maintain them. Nothing will stand up to abuse and neglect.

Z910A precursor to 915E
Purchased this mowers predecessor in 2010 and just sold it with 840 hours on the meter. In the 10 years of owning it, I only replaced the deck belt once, the tension pulley on the deck, and seat switch. Love the diagnostic code system with the explanation stuck to the machine. It mowed great, never bogged down, and never had a mechanical issue. Once I leveled the deck after first receiving it, I never had to adjust again. It never went back to the dealer. It mowed great in wet grass and dry. Add a grassflap with oregon g6 blades and you have a mulching machine for leaves. Always ran the high lift blades for normal mowing. I always changed the oil, oil filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, and both air filters every 50 hours. Changed the hydraulic fluid every 200 hours. It may be a little overkill, but again, for the price of these machines I will be more than happy to spend an extra few $100 for piece of mine and insurance. I chose the Deere over the competition because of the ability to mow wet grass and the placement and ease of use of the height adjustment dial. No dowel pins to bend over and move. Excellent mower. I only sold it because we moved to a property that is all hill ranging from 5-20 degree slopes. After testing many brands, I purchased an X758.
