MulchControl™ system provides superior mulching performance and rapid conversion
The optional MulchControl system makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching, but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:
- Creates a beautiful looking lawn
- Smaller grass clippings disappear into the lawn canopy
- Reduces fertilizer needs
- Grass clippings are not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
- No need to dispose of bags of clippings
How MulchControl works
MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:
- The MulchControl system includes an adjustable MulchControl baffle near the discharge chute and fixed baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
- The MulchControl handle, or an electric one-touch actuator, is on top of the mower deck and is used to open and close the MulchControl baffle.
- When the MulchControl baffle is open, most of the material flows freely out the discharge deflector or into a material collection system.
- When the MulchControl baffle is closed, material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.
MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:
- For operators who usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
- For operators who usually side discharge, but would like to close the chute to control clippings in some areas
- For operators who always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
- For operators who collect clippings but want to go farther before emptying the material collection system
MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings.
Electric one-touch MulchControl
Electric one-touch MulchControl systems shift the MulchControl baffle using an electric actuator that is operated by a dash-mounted switch.
Operators can convert between modes without interrupting the mowing process, making it possible to change between modes:
- When approaching driveways or flower beds where clippings would be undesirable
- When a breeze blows clippings back onto the operator
- For side discharge mowing only the areas of the property where grass is too thick for mulching
- With 48A and 54A Mower Decks, for collecting only the areas of the property where grass is too tall or thick for mulching
MulchControl limitations
While in the side discharge mode, MulchControl still mulches about one third of the material. Therefore, the side discharge mode is essentially a partial mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:
- When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
- When cutting in wet, high growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
- When optimum bagging and lawn cleanup is desired
- 42A Mower Deck requires a MulchControl baffle be removed to install the bagger chute
When bagging with MulchControl on a 48A or 54A mower deck, the MulchControl baffle can be opened or closed with the Power Flow™ blower installed. The Power Flow blower runs without material when the baffle is closed.
When bagging with MulchControl on a 42A mower deck, the cut-and-throw rear bagger can be used with the MulchControl blades. However, the rear MulchControl baffle (A) needs to be removed to install the bagger chute. The baffle is held in place with two carriage bolts. To return to mulching, the chute needs to be removed and the baffle replaced.
MulchControl compatibility
Each MulchControl system is an optional field-installed attachment and includes everything needed: baffles, mulch blades, a handle (lever action attachments) or an actuator, wiring, and switches (electric one-touch attachments).

Excellent cut quality
Deep mower-deck stamping gives excellent cut quality. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck without getting recut:
- Reducing the amount of recutting enables more power to be used to cut incoming grass, which greatly improves mower capacity.
- Helps maintain excellent cut quality at faster mowing speeds
- Clean flow of material out of discharge area prevents cut material from interfering with cutting the incoming grass, making it possible for the blades to cut incoming material cleanly.
- Even in mulching mode, cut evenness is improved compared to other designs because the additional depth allows for continuous circulation, optimal recutting, and an even distribution of clippings.
- Exact Adjust deck-leveling system allows for easy and accurate leveling of the mower deck.
Productivity - getting the job done fast
Deep mower-deck stamping gives high productivity, which gets the job done fast. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck quickly, reducing the amount of recutting so more power is available to process incoming grass:
- Greatly improves mower's capacity to maintain excellent mowing performance in difficult mowing conditions and at higher speeds
Large discharge opening is both high and wide to handle more material:
- Gives a smooth, even discharge of clippings at all mowing speeds
- Reduces the chance of plugging, especially important when operating in wet, thick, or dense grass and when bagging
- The 48A Power Flow blower has an inlet housing with over 50 percent greater area than the 48X Power Flow blower used on previous machines.
Cleanliness - for the mower and the operator
The flat-top shape of the deck stamping is optimal for keeping itself and the operator clean:
- There are few places to catch and hold material on top and underneath the deck.
- Top of deck stays cleaner, reducing time and effort needed for cleaning and service
- Underside of deck is self-cleaning to maintain optimum performance without buildup of material to interfere with the flow of air and clippings
- Less need to clean and remove buildup of material from underside deck
- The depth of the Accel Deep mower deck minimizes the amount of material that escapes from the front of the deck:
- Limited amount of material to drift onto the operator and mower deck
- Even for material discharged out the chute, less recutting results in larger pieces that are less likely to end up on the operator
- Mulching prevents the discharge of material completely and MulchControl makes mulching a practical solution for most mowing situations.
Cleaning a mower deck, both top and bottom, is one of the most frequent maintenance activities:
- The flat-top design reduces places for material to build up and makes material that does collect easy to remove.
A wash port is provided to make cleaning the underside of the mower deck easy.
- Hose connector is included with the mower deck.
Superior durability is designed in
The 48A Mower Deck has strong spindle pockets, to keep the blades aligned, even after years of tough service:
- Stamped from strong 10-gauge, 0.135-in. (3.4-mm) steel
- Ribs in the deck shell add strength where it is needed
- The 48A has a 23 percent heavier overall weight than the Edge™ Xtra 48-in. (122-cm) Mower Deck used on previous machines.
Mower wheels are heavy duty:
- Provides greater strength and durability for longer, trouble-free life.
- Setting wheels to the correct height for the cutting height quick and easy.
Low-tension belt-drive design reduces the side load on engine lower bearings and mower deck bearings for longer life.
The 48A Mower Deck features a 5/8-in. (16-mm) diameter solid-steel rod side bumper that provides extra strength and protection.
Dual-stage E-coat and powder-paint coatings provide extra protection from rust.Versatility - easy to change between side discharge, mulch, and bagging modes
The 48A Mower Deck is designed for maximum versatility, providing the greatest ease in changing from one mower discharge mode to another:

Exact Adjust ports and onboard deck-leveling tools make precise deck adjustments easy
A mower deck must be level side-to-side and properly adjusted front-to-rear to give the best cutting performance. A removable onboard deck-leveling gauge and a hex-key tool are provided to make adjustment easy. They are securely stored under the tractor seat.
Exact Adjust leveling ports are provided on each side of the operator platform above the mower-level adjusting bolts. With the hex-shaped tool, they provide convenient access to allow quick and easy adjustment of the mower for the best-cut quality of cut.
The Exact Adjust feature is standard on all Select Series™ X300 and X500 Tractors:- There is no need to reach under the fender deck while making the mower-level adjustment.
- Onboard deck-leveling gauge, Exact Adjust ports, and the hex tool work together.
- Level the mower deck side to side
- Set the correct amount of rake (front-to-back deck orientation)
- Calibrate the cutting height to the cut-height adjusting knob setting
- Exact Adjust simplifies leveling the mower deck if equipped with a Power Flow™ blower.
- To give the best cut, mower level should be adjusted if alternately mowing with and without blower installed. The Exact Adjust feature makes this easy.
Consult the operator's manual for the correct adjusting procedures for each tractor model. Basic adjusting steps to properly level the mower deck include:
- Park the tractor on a level surface.
- Inflate tires to the correct pressure.

Comfortable seat
An 18-in. (46-cm), high-back cut-and-sewn seat delivers a comfortable, smooth ride and excellent support for the operator:
- A smoother, more comfortable ride results from the use of more foam than in a form-in-place seat and more side-bolstering to stabilize the operator on uneven terrain.
- Improved visual appeal is provided by the thicker cushion, additional bolstering in the seat and back, and an embroidered John Deere logo that makes this upscale seat look as good as it feels.
- Long-term pliability and less chance of cracking are advantages of the cut-and-sewn process, which does not require heating during the manufacturing process and gives a more uniform vinyl thickness.
- Additional operator support and comfort is available with optional BM23761 armrests.
- Reduced cost of repair, should the seat cover be damaged, is available with a replaceable seat cover available from Parts.
- Seat travel of 6.6 in. (17 cm) with 15 positions allows the operator to be seated comfortably and easily operate the controls. Seat can be easily adjusted fore and aft by the operator while sitting on the seat.
Adjustable seat suspension
The seat suspension is adjustable, without tools, for the weight of the operator:
- Springs are adjustable fore and aft to any of three positions.
- No tools required
- Allows fine-tuning of the suspension for the operator's weight
- Back position for more support for heavier operators
- Tool tray is designed into the seat base.
- Can be used to store gloves, small tools, etc.
- Provides storage location for Exact Adjust tool and deck-leveling gauge
Cup holder and toolbox
A cup holder and toolbox are located on the fender for operator convenience:
- The cup holder holds a variety of container sizes.
- Toolbox provides convenient storage.
- Toolbox cover snaps closed to provide protection for loose tools, cell phones, etc.
- Cup holder and toolbox are constructed of durable acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic.
Removable plug for optional 12-V outlet
A removable plug on the console, in front of the operator, provides a convenient location for the optional 12-V outlet and makes installation easy.
- Convenient for plugging in cell phone charger and other electric devices
- Can be used to operate electric rear equipment, such as a sprayer or spreader
12-V fast connector
A mid-vehicle, 12-V fast connector, located under the tractor’s fuse box, is included as standard equipment to reduce initial installation time for some attachments that operate on 12-V power from the tractor:
- The four-cavity connector includes battery, ground, and key switch terminals and is turned on and off with the ignition switch.

Smooth Ride that mows well
I bought this mower 4 years ago and have 92 hours on mower. This mower has been excellent thus far. Keep it serviced and lubricated and garaged kept. There has been complaints about mower’s seat. I mow less than a hour weekly so not an issue for me. However, the seat did get a crack in it that I replaced while under warranty. Better quality seating Is not to much to ask for John Deere to improve on. Overall, a very good product in my opinion. Previously had a L 130. Not impressed with the lower end John Deere mowers.

Worth it.
I purchased this tractor about 2 years ago. It's been a great tractor. Some folks stated that it cuts uneven, all that needs to be done is a deck adjustment with the tools provided under seat. My mower didn't need much adjusting, but i adjusted to perfect it. I've ran this tractor to its limits and back a few times and didn't even phase it. The only thing i don't like is when you get a on uneven hill side one wheel spins. Not a real big issue. I use my mower weekly to cut acres. The maintence kit is great too. Easy to access oil, spark plugs and air filter. This tractor is better than the ones from brand stores. Highly recommend. Cuts fast and clean. Cant wait to get a larger fancier one later.

Quality Machine
My x380 just rolled over 50 hours. I've it had one year. I mow a little, mulch tons of leaves with the optional under-deck kit, haul a trailer with firewood, and tow my 600 pound log splitter to various wood piles. Basic maintenance is simple. Plenty of power. I've never had a mower that leaves such a smooth and even finish on the lawn. You can buy a 48" cut lawn tractor at big box stores for much less, but in my experience the cheap ones don't stand up to hard use. The JD does. Instead of turf tires I ordered tires with farm tractor style tread. Traction is much better. I also use the three 60 pound satchel weights on the back hitch sometimes. It makes a big difference in what you can pull without spinning out. I winced at the price when I bought it, but it does the job and looks like it will be a long-term (15-20 years) winner. That's my plan, anyway.

Fully Meets Expectations
This week I traded my LX277 bought exactly 20 years ago this month on a new x380. The LX277 provided excellent service for more than 1200 hours. It was still operating well but it was time. Started out looking at the X350 and some competitors, and a good sales person suggested the more robust transmission in the x380 would provide greater value for my application. Mowed my 2+/- acres with the x380 for the first time today. Lots of trees, flower beds, bumps and few steep spots. It's an outstanding machine. Cut my mowing time by 20% and I haven't even learned the machine yet. The quality of cut is excellent. Overall quality of product meets expectations.

Great Tractor
I have had my X380 for a little over a month and I have not been disappointed. I bought this to replace a Cub Cadet 1527 and talk about an upgrade. I have more power than I can ever need and the quality of the cut is superb. With my old mower I would have to slow down or go over some areas twice when it came to deeper grass. This is no longer the case with my X380. My lawn looks like a carpet. The anti-scalp wheels being adjustable is a big plus for me. My yard has plenty of undulations and spots where my previous mower would cut very close to the ground. I don't have those worries any more. Also, the ride that this mower gives is very nice. The only complaint I have is that cup holder will not hold my 32oz Yeti! If you are considering this mower, buy it! Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

best value if you just cut grass
After years of mowing over two acres of varied terrain with an lx279 that literally was dissolving around me I decided to upgrade. I wanted the X380 for the better transmission. Got the 54 inch deck. I can't believe I waited so long. It's three times the machine the Lx279 ever was. The bigger tires make a huge difference. It's super powerful and no hill can stop it. Cuts freaking unbelievably well. The decks are fantastic. Needed a mower for my other acre property and cheaped out with an s240. Mowed once with it and exchanged for another X380 but with 48 inch deck. If you tow you'll need a X570 or above but if you mainly cut and blow leaves this thing is a freaking beast!!!!

X380 not quite there yet
only two problems with this mower : seat does not adjust far enough (i'm a 6ft 2 in tall man) and when i step off of the mower(L.H. side) my pants cuff drops right over the protruding shaft of the left rear adjustable deck wheel. being a 2016 model, there are not many accessories available at this time ie: mulching kit for 46 in. deck.

The best mower
Bought this mower in Oct 2017 to replace a 22 yr old LX172. If that mower was that good, I know this one will be better. It has lots of power and is heavy built. After all it's a John Deere.

Hate this mower
I bought this brand new mower last July. Have had nothing but trouble with it. Drive belts, blades cut uneven. have replaced belts because they shred. replaced blades because they scalp, cut uneven etc... so much work to put the belts on. It's a 54 inch. Battery ran dead after it wouldn't start. the list goes on and on.

Quality Lawn/Garden Tractor (no problems so far)
My 2017 X380 just rolled over 128 hours. I've had it over one year. I bought this tractor to replace 2 riders, a 2008 Troy-Bilt Mustang Colt 42" cut zero-turn & a Craftsman LT2000 42" cut. I mow grass with it (I love to mow), haul a trailer with brush sometimes (has plenty of power to move trailers of dirt, rock, mulch etc.). It has the 22HP Kawasaki engine and stronger (K58) transmission compared to lower price models and the price goes up significantly for small increases in power, features, transmission, etc. Basic maintenance is simple. Plenty of power. I've never had a mower that leaves such a smooth and even finish on the lawn. You can buy a 48" cut lawn tractor at big box stores for much less (such as a JD D160 OR E170), but in my experience the cheap ones don't stand up to hard use (transmission failures). The JD does. It does the job and looks like it will be a long-term (10-20 years) winner. That's my plan (or game plan), anyway. But, after all it's a real John Deere.

Good ride, deck get's unbalanced too often
The tractor itself feels very good and powerful, but when you add the power blower, it seems like the weight gets the whole thing out of balance very quickly and streaky cut. Although there's a wrench to adjust the deck from the seat, it's very difficult to reach the right spot where the key has to go. And the tool to measure the deck can't be used when the blower is on.

Great machine with a TERRIBLE cutting deck
I bought this X380 about two years ago. It only has 75 hours on it currently. It runs excellent and has plenty of power. Those are the only good things I can say about it. The cutting height and deck leveling system are TERRIBLE. The deck on my machine continuously goes out of level. Earlier this year I had to take it in for service because the deck wouldn't level. That was about 15 hours ago on the machine. Today, while I was mowing the front "bar" that holds the deck level simply came undone while I was mowing and bent under and into the blades. To say I am frustrated with this JD is an understatement. Now it goes back to JD for them to charge me to fix what is a terrible design.

Thsi is a great tractor
I bought this tractor to replace a 9 year old Husqvarna 2348LS. I had replaced the transmission and PTO last year on the Husqvarna. I am have engine problem this year so I started looking. I started to buy a D160 but bought the X380 with 48" deck. It is a beast of a tractor, very quiet while running, great traction on inclines. This is the best tractor I have ever owned, I have had 3 other brands before the John Deere. John Deere is pricey but as of now I think it is worth the cost. GREAT TRACTOR!

super upgrade from X300
more power and better tranny than x300. Love the new easy clean deck. Harder to steer on tight turns, but aggressive tires may be to blame...these tires really bite and grab the turf.

Great machine, cuts smooth, plenty of power, resonally comfortable, well made.
After researching for a couple of weeks, the X380 was my choice. It has plenty of power and really cuts thick grass on uneven terrain with no problem. I like the operator controls and digital read-out features. Everything is easy to find on the operator's panel. This machine is well made, and the hardware (washers, nuts / bolts, etc) appear to be durable. For my use, the wider rear tires make mowing wet areas a breeze since some of my yard stays somewhat soft. Clean-up is quick and easy. This machine cuts grass like there's no tomorrow. I've never owned a rider that cuts grass like this one. leveling the deck could not be easier. The owner's manual is easy to understand and all the info you need is in there. The turning radius could be a little smaller. Overall, I am very well pleased. JD did their homework on this one!

X380
I had a another lawn tractor forever and thought it was a good mower that is until I bought an X380 and wondered why I waited so long. The X380 is a much safer mower. Awesome engine, great smooth sound and plenty of power. Only problem is I end up cutting the grass to0 often because it is a great mower - wouldn't hesitate to tell someone to buy one. Paired with a John Deere 10p cart it makes yard work a breeze. Definite get the mulch kit and the JD steering wheel knob

Keeps stalling
My x380 was just picked up for the 6th time for it dying out like it runs out of gas. Sometimes I can’t even go 50 feet with it dying out. It’s starts back up, then dies out 50 feet later. The frustrating part is I can cut grass 3 weeks in a row with no problems, then this happens. I’ve replaced the fuel, fuel filter, and fuel pump with no results. My x380 only has 50 hours on it. I’m ready to get rid of it and buy something other than a John Deere.

High quality machine. Poor cut.
I purchased a new x380 last month and was very excited. It cost twice as much as my previous craftsman but seemed like a much higher quality machine. Engine runs great. Seems well made. I love the features like the comfortable seat and the large fuel fill cap. Mulches well. One problem. The cut is absolutely terrible. It’s primary purpose. It leaves lines of tall grass where I can only guess the blades meet. I have tried various blade heights, speeds and differing amounts of overlap. However nothing seems to help. It is the worst looking cut of any mower I’ve ever owned. This is incredibly sad because I wanted to live this machine. I have cut with it a few times now hoping I could get over it but I just can’t. I shouldn’t have to take out a tiny push mower before entertaining to cut my lawn because of how poorly my brand new tractor cuts. Makes me sick thinking about it looking at my lawn I just had to double cut. I’m sure this is a design flaw and nothing the dealer can do to fix. I would recommend another product. It gets two stars because is does seem like a quality product…with a terrible cut.

X380 the best machine for me
We had a Sabre 22HP 54" Deck since 1998 and when it came time to replace it we knew another John Deere was the one to have. We initially went with the X350 and found the tire size just too small to tackle the terrain on our sandy hilly four acres. Thanks to John Deere's 30 day satisfaction I am please to say that the X380 gave me just that bit more that we needed to make things very smooth. I don't think I will ever use all of that 22HP, but the tire size increase was the trick for better terrain management and ride quality. Big thanks to John Klas of Green Mark of Kent City, Michigan for making the transaction from start to finish so easy!

A little expensive, but worth it for the long run
I bought this tractor because of the green fever event in February. Along with the $500 off, I was able to get the dealer to knock another $400 off of the list price for a final price of $3500. I replaced a D140 I bought new 6 years ago. Nothing wrong with the D140, but I had always wanted an X series and the timing was right. I decided on the x380 to get the upgraded wheels along with the larger engine (Kawasaki) and transmission. To me it is the best bargain for what you get. I do not miss 4-wheel or power steering or hydraulic lift, especially not for $1000 more. It steers easy and relatively tight. It has tons of power and the engine speed hardly drops even in tall grass. It cuts great and level. The adjustable wheels deck is the way to go. It is much more stable and powerful than my D140 and seems to use about half the gas per mow. The deck leveling system is easy to use if you look under to guide the wrench to the bolts. I love the instrument panel and the gauges are great and accurate. I have no negatives to say except that it should have come with the bumper instead of me having to purchase separately. I also installed a john deere steering spinner wheel and it is great. I loved my D140 and love my x380 even more! I would recommend it to anyone. You will be glad you purchased!

Great Bang for my Buck!!
I purchased my X380 back in May. Money well spent in my book. I actually was looking for an S170 or S180. The box stores didn't have any so I went to a John Deere dealer. They had 2 X380's left. Got one and I have ben enjoying it ever since. It was a little over my budget but in the end, It's perfect for what I needed and well worth it. Looking forward to many years with it.

Traditional John Deere quality.
I have my 380 about a month now. I have never owned a lawn tractor before so admittedly have nothing to compare it to. What I can tell you is that it feels solid, cuts the grass evenly, climbs hills with ease and is soooo easy to drive. You do not need power steering, (that is standard on the 390 for about 1k more). I also bought the 10cu. ft. cart (quality) which has made yard work much easier. I filled it over the top with grass edgings (I estimate about 500lbs) pulled it up a hill like it wasn't there. Very happy with my purchase.

Sweet Spot
This tractor hit the sweet spot for me in regard to value, features, and price. It has the Kawasaki engine and stronger transmission compared to lower price models and the price goes up significantly for small increases in power, features, transmission, etc. I’ve been very satisfied with the unit for mowing and pulling a trailer, dethatcher, and aerator. Even pulled people on a sled with it! The quality of this unit compared to even the high end big box tractors is appreciable. Just the deck alone is substantially higher quality. I do wish removing the deck wasn’t so complicated and difficult. The John Deere accessories I’ve purchased (for example, bucket holder and brush guard) are difficult to install and do not fit well (holes do not align properly, bolts have loosened quickly, instructions are poor, etc.). Charging plugs fall out of the John Deere charging kit outlet so it has proven useless which is a shame due to the high price of John Deere accessories. So, I would recommend sticking with aftermarket accessories and implements. Since I purchased with the intent of fully accessorizing, this was a pretty big disappointment. Maintenance of this tractor is a breeze. The 22 HP engine is plenty powerful to pull up hills and move the mower at a quick pace. Cruise control is a great feature.

Upgraded from LX280 to X380
I purchased a John Deere X380 to replace a 14-year-old John Deere LX280 with almost 500 hours. The LX280 is still running fine, but I wanted some of the new features and mowing improvements. Here are some of the things I found better with the X380: • Tighter turns so smaller cutting circle and quicker U-turns. • Faster acceleration. Gets up to speed quickly and zips right up hills. • More power. Larger Kawasaki engine cuts through tall grass with ease. • Cleaner cut. Much smoother cut and I can mow the grass at taller mower deck settings. The LX280 left an uneven cut whenever the mower deck was set over 2.5 inches. The X380 cuts the lawn smooth all the way up to the maximum height of 4.0 inches. It’s supposedly better to mow your grass tall in the summertime and it looks better when it is 3.5 to 4.0 inches after being cut. • Improved dashboard – the X380 includes a gas gauge and target cutting RPMs. The LX280 had no dashboard, only an hour meter. I really have enjoyed the LX280 mower. However, I like the X380 much better. It’s a fantastic mower and should last an extremely long time with reasonable care. Highly recommended!

The x380 is a great mower
Upgraded from 17 year old LT170 to X380 and pleased with high quality build components from the frame, to the deck, wheels, engine all reinforcing the John Deere brand. Excellent sales service from team at Little’s.

It's built Deere Tough, but...
This is my second Deere, the first was 20 years ago. The addition of all the technology in this new Deere does NOT make it a better machine. I use the front blade to plow, and since the hand control lever for the deck is now "foot" operated, this makes it SOOOO much harder to float the blade in delicate situations. It also seems to use much more fuel than my older Deere. I remove the deck MANY times a season, as it's easier to use the tractor all over the property with the utility cart or log splitter in tow...my old Deere has a simple lever on the drive belt tensioner pully so that the deck is an easy off. But my new Deere, you have to use a socket wrench with a socket to do this task. It's not that I don't have SEVERAL wrenches, it's just that it's so much more of a pain. The back reflectors are no longer used...and while these may seem a small thing; when plowing at 3:00 am they make you MORE visible to an oncoming car than nothing at all. The new style cruise control is more like a car, in that you set the speed with your accelerator pedal and then depress the switch to hold it. My old cruise was so much better in that if you need to slow down or speed up a bit, you just slide the lever in one direction or the other...a simple one handed operation; whereas the new cruise is hand and foot all over again. My old Deere has a transmission where you can change the filter and add fluid; the new transmission is sealed. My old Deere was a 235 and the new is a 380, so while the new Deere is supposed to be a much better tractor...it's not as simple to operate. And I'm not sure yet about all the new added electronic technology! Time will tell, but I prefer the simple and sparse layout of the old Deere to the new over the top digital display. It's a tractor! It's a John Deere tractor, so it's a workhorse! All the bells and whistles are NOT necessary. Save the money there and put it into something more important in the tractor's design.

Typical John Deere Quality
I recently purchased a X380 to replace my John Deere 316 that I have had for twenty five years. When I decided on a new tractor it never crossed my mind to buy anything other than a John Deere, based on my satisfaction with their products in the last two tractors I have owned. The X380 has all the power I need and my lawn looks great. The engine is quiet and easy on gas. The deck leveling and mower system makes is easy to do, even though I do miss the hydraulic lift. The instrumentation is easy to read and user friendly, while the tractor handles easily and is very comfortable for me at 6-4. You may pay a little more up front for a John Deere, but if you take care of them they will last a lifetime.

Love it!
I bought my X380 in the fall of 2016 to replace a 22 year old LX172 whose (single cylinder Kawasaki) motor finally gave out. Decided on the X380 for the extra power and better tranny over lesser models. I didn't realize how much better it would be than my old LX172. For starters, more power (22 vs. 14). Second, I like the hydrostatic trans much better than I thought I would (I thought I liked shifting). Third, it cuts better, more cleanly and more smoothly. I can run through most of my 3 acre yard at full speed without compromising the quality of the cut (I do slow down over roots and a couple of low spots). Then, things like a fuel gauge and battery monitor are really handy. I have a bit more than 60 hours on it so far. Some complain about the seat; it seems very comfortable to me. I have had absolutely no problems or issues with it so far. I'm thinking it will probably last longer than I will.

Mower deck needs an engineering review
I have owned John Deere lawn tractors for the greater part of 30 years. I bought this mower 2 weeks ago. Have 2.1 hours on it. The front deck wheels are about gone. Have to haul it back to dealer. Product engineering needs to review this design.

Mowes really good
I'm going to like it better with time. Yard really looks good after mowing. Harder to operate than smaller mowers. The only thing I don't like is the back up mode, you have to push a button with your left hand while steering with your right hand to keep the blades engaged with no power steering its harder. It's built a lot stronger than my last mower so this one should last all of my mowing years. A trailer hitch ball fits on the back so I can pull my trailer out of the back yard when I need to take the mower to another location. That's great.

Great Mower
Bought this lawn tractor in the spring of 2019. Just put 100 hours on it.. This replaced my Cub Cadet GT 2544.. The Cub was getting old and needed replaced.. I’m very happy with the X380. It cuts grass exceptionally well and runs great.. Before purchasing this model I considered a 500 series tractor. Glad I chose this one. It has and does all I need it to do.. No regrets.. My only disappointment would be the deck and it’s removal.. also the plastic hood.. but I knew about both of these before the purchase.. Overall a great tractor!

Lawn beast
I have owned my X380 for about a month and have cut my 2+ acres twice. The mower has cut my undulating yard without a hiccup, and has cut nice and even. It climbs hills without any problem, although the rear tire spun a time or two. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. I look forward to many years happily sitting on my John Deere!

I do love my X380
Bought my X380 three years ago to cut my 3 acre yard. I was concerned at first that it might not be up to the task of such a large piece of ground. Especially given that it is not very smooth ground. But the X380 has been a really good machine so far. It has met and exceeded all of my expectations. I thought it was a bit expensive, but I would not hesitate to recommend it to family or friends. I expect that it will service my needs for years more to come.

Worst cutting mower I have ever owned
Thought I would spend some money and get a great cutting mower. Wrong. Constantly sharpening blades adjusting deck, adjusting speed. Lawn looks like I rolled it not mowed .it. Design flaw. Nothing dealer can do.

Very Impressive!
Purchased the X380 this spring and I wanted to use it for awhile before posting a review. It is a beast! Quiet and effortless power. Easy turning with a short turning radius. (no need to upgrade to power steering) Do yourself a favor and order the electronic mulch control upgrade. Best money I ever spent. It doesn't leave a blade of grass on the lawn. My yard now looks like a golf course! I used to spend hours with my old mower going back over grass clippings again and again. No more! This machine saves me a lot of valuable time. Great warranty as well. So far, I have been very impressed with my X380!
