Excellent cut quality
Deep mower-deck stamping gives excellent cut quality. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck without getting recut:
- Reducing the amount of recutting enables more power to be used to cut incoming grass, which greatly improves mower capacity.
- Helps maintain excellent cut quality at faster mowing speeds
- Clean flow of material out of discharge area prevents cut material from interfering with cutting the incoming grass, making it possible for the blades to cut incoming material cleanly.
- Even in mulching mode, cut evenness is improved compared to other designs because the additional depth allows for continuous circulation, optimal recutting, and an even distribution of clippings.
- Exact Adjust deck-leveling system allows for easy and accurate leveling of the mower deck
Productivity - gets the job done fast
Deep mower-deck stamping gives high productivity, which gets the job done fast. It allows the cut and suspended material room to exit the deck quickly, reducing the amount of recutting so more power is available to process incoming grass:
- Greatly improves mowers capacity to maintain excellent mowing performance in difficult mowing conditions and at higher speeds
Large discharge opening is both high and wide to handle more material:
- Gives a smooth, even discharge of clippings at all mowing speeds
- Reduces the chance of plugging, especially important when operating in wet, thick, or dense grass and when bagging
- Cut-and-throw chute has a large, optimized inlet which aids in collecting material by using airflow from the large deck opening
Cleanliness - for the mower and the operator
The flat-top shape of the deck stamping is optimal for keeping itself and the operator clean:
- There are few places to catch and hold material on top and underneath the deck.
- Top of deck stays cleaner, reducing time and effort needed for cleaning and service
- Underside of deck is self-cleaning to maintain optimum performance without buildup of material to interfere with the flow of air and clippings
- Less need to clean and remove buildup of material from underside deck
- The depth of the Accel Deep mower deck minimizes the amount of material that escapes from the front of the deck
- Limited amount of material to drift onto the operator and mower deck
- Even flow of material discharged out the chute, less recutting results in larger pieces that are less likely to end up on the operator
- Mulching prevents the discharge of material completely and MulchControl makes mulching a practical solution for most mowing situations.
Cleaning a mower deck, both top and bottom, is one of the most frequent maintenance activities:
- The flat-top design reduces places for material to build up and makes material that does collect easy to remove.
A wash port is provided to make cleaning the underside of the mower deck easy.
- Hose connector is included with the mower deck.
Superior durability is designed in
The 42A Mower Deck has strong spindle pockets to keep the blades aligned, even after years of tough service:
- Ribs in the deck shell add strength where it is needed.
- The 42A has a 16 percent heavier overall weight than the Edge™ Xtra 42-in. (107-cm) Mower Deck.
Mower wheels are double captured:
- Provides greater strength and durability for longer, trouble-free life.
- Single-bolt adjustment makes setting wheels to the correct height for the cutting height quick and easy.
Low-tension belt-drive design reduces the side load on the engines lower bearing and mower deck bearings for longer life.
Rolled outer edge of the deck provides extra strength and protection.
Dual-stage E-coat and powder-paint coatings provide extra protection from rust.Versatility - easy to change between side discharge, mulch, and bagging modes
The 42A Mower Deck is designed for maximum versatility, providing the greatest ease in changing from one mower discharge mode to another:
- With an optional MulchControl system installed (along with the special mulching blades), changing from side discharging to mulching or vice versa is done with the simple flip of a lever or push of an electric switch.
- The cut-and-throw rear bagger can be used with MulchControl by removing the rear MulchControl baffle (A) before installing the bagger chute. The baffle is held in place with two carriage bolts. To return to mulching, the chute needs to be removed and the baffle replaced.
7-bu (247-L) rear bagger
An optional 7-bu (247-L) cut-and-throw rear bagger material collection system (MCS) is available for use with the 42-in. (107-cm) Accel Deep Mower. It provides an efficient means of collecting grass clippings and leaves.

Frame is reliable heavy-duty welded steel
The frame is made of heavy formed and welded steel, reinforced in critical areas for even greater strength:
- The frame is formed from 12-gauge, 0.105-in. (2.66-mm) thick material for long life.
- Standard front bumper and hitch plate are formed from 9-gauge, 0.15-in. (3.8-mm) steel and complete the frame assembly.
- Rear hitch plate can support two 42-lb (19-kg) Quik-Tatch weights.
- Weight bracket is built into the frame of two-wheel-steer models.
- Four-wheel-steer models require the optional weight bracket.
Front axle and wheel spindles are heavy-duty
Front axle is made of nodular cast iron:
- Cast-iron front axle is strong and shock resistant.
- Cast iron will not yield under heavy loads or impact.
A replaceable bushing is used at axle mounting:
- The bushing provides excellent wear resistance.
- Grease fittings at each spindle are easy to service.
Front steering spindles
Front steering spindle diameter is 0.75 in. (19 mm) for strength and long life:

Four-wheel steer gives superior maneuverability and trimming ability
NOTE: In the schematic above, the solid line refers to a four-wheel steer tractor, and the hashed line refers to a two-wheel steer tractor.
Four-wheel steering provides very significant maneuverability and trimming advantages over that of two-wheel-steering-equipped tractors.
For example, with the X384 Select Series™ Tractor equipped with a 48-in. (122-cm) Accel Deep™ Mower (the following numbers correspond to the schematic above):- Uncut circle radius is reduced from 21 in. (53 cm) for a two-wheel steer X380 to only 9 in. (23 cm) for an X384, eliminating or greatly reducing the need to back up when trimming around trees, shrubs, etc.
- Interference from the mower and tractor wheels is eliminated because they are several inches away from the object being trimmed around.
- Outside turning circle is reduced, reducing the time spent turning and increasing mowing efficiency.
Also, trimming inside curves around flower beds or other landscaping can be done more completely with a four-wheel steer tractor.
Designed for tight turns
The four-wheel steering system is designed for tight turns, leading to greater mowing efficiency:
-
Caster, camber, and kingpin angles are optimized to reduce effort, especially when going from straight ahead into a turn.
-
Steering geometry has been designed with the use of 3D modeling, so all four tires are working together.
-
Sealed ball bearings are used on the torque shaft and the rear spindles to reduce friction.
-
Small scrub radius, less than 1 in. (2.5 cm) in the rear, reduces scuffing and bump-steer.
Designed for easy steering
Sealed ball bearings are used at critical all-wheel-steer joints for reduced friction, longer life, and less maintenance.
Easy steering is important for an enjoyable mowing experience:
-
Larger, 14-in. (35.6-cm) diameter steering wheel gives improved leverage for easier turns.
-
Larger sector gear gives improved (higher) steering ratio.
-
A higher ratio equals lower steering effort.
-
-
Dual drag links help equalize steering loads and greatly reduce steering error.
-
Ball-joints on both ends of the steering tie rods reduce wear to maintain accurate steering.
-
Long steering arms improve the mechanical advantage of the steering system through the full range of motion.
-
The steering shaft rotates on a sealed ball bearing at its lower end, near the pinion gear, to reduce steering effort and provide a smooth feel for the life of the tractor.
-
The sector gear pivots on a shaft rather than a bushing to ensure proper gear mesh and eliminate binding.
-
Pivoting of the upper and lower ends of the sector gear shaft on sealed ball bearings reduces steering effort and provides a smooth feel for the life of the tractor.
-
Greaseable front steering spindles reduce friction and improve wear over time.
-
MulchControl™ system provides superior mulching performance and rapid conversion
The optional MulchControl system makes mulching more practical for many mowing situations because it not only does an excellent job of mulching, but it also allows the mower to be easily converted for times when it is more desirable to side discharge or collect the lawn material. Advantages of mulching grass clippings include:
- Creates a beautiful looking lawn
- Smaller grass clippings disappear into the lawn canopy
- Reduces fertilizer needs
- Grass clippings are not blown onto the operator, driveways, or flower beds
- No need to dispose of bags of clippings
How MulchControl works
MulchControl is an innovative, simple design that is easy to use and maintain:
- The MulchControl system includes an adjustable MulchControl baffle near the discharge chute and fixed baffles to control the flow of material under the deck.
- The MulchControl handle, or an electric one-touch actuator, is on top of the mower deck and is used to open and close the MulchControl baffle.
- When the MulchControl baffle is open, most of the material flows freely out the discharge deflector or into a material collection system.
- When the MulchControl baffle is closed, material stays within the deck and gets chopped into mulch and deposited in the turf.
MulchControl is well-suited to the following mowing situations:
- For operators who usually mulch, but side discharge when grass gets too long
- For operators who usually side discharge, but would like to close the chute to control clippings in some areas
- For operators who always mulch a main lawn, but often side discharge secondary lawns
- For operators who collect clippings but want to go farther before emptying the material collection system
MulchControl puts the operator in control of the clippings.
Electric one-touch MulchControl
Electric one-touch MulchControl systems shift the MulchControl baffle using an electric actuator that is operated by a dash-mounted switch.
Operators can convert between modes without interrupting the mowing process, making it possible to change between modes:
- When approaching driveways or flower beds where clippings would be undesirable
- When a breeze blows clippings back onto the operator
- For side discharge mowing only the areas of the property where grass is too thick for mulching
- With 48A and 54A Mower Decks, for collecting only the areas of the property where grass is too tall or thick for mulching
MulchControl limitations
While in the side discharge mode, MulchControl still mulches about one third of the material. Therefore, the side discharge mode is essentially a partial mulch mode. This can be an advantage when side discharging or bagging, as it helps to reduce the amount of material being discharged. Other times this could work as a disadvantage:
- When cutting strong southern grasses, such as Zoysia and Bermuda
- When cutting in wet, high growth conditions, such as those found in the Pacific Northwest United States
- When optimum bagging and lawn cleanup is desired
- 42A Mower Deck requires a MulchControl baffle be removed to install the bagger chute
When bagging with MulchControl on a 48A or 54A mower deck, the MulchControl baffle can be opened or closed with the Power Flow™ blower installed. The Power Flow blower runs without material when the baffle is closed.
When bagging with MulchControl on a 42A mower deck, the cut-and-throw rear bagger can be used with the MulchControl blades. However, the rear MulchControl baffle (A) needs to be removed to install the bagger chute. The baffle is held in place with two carriage bolts. To return to mulching, the chute needs to be removed and the baffle replaced.
MulchControl compatibility
Each MulchControl system is an optional field-installed attachment and includes everything needed: baffles, mulch blades, a handle (lever action attachments) or an actuator, wiring, and switches (electric one-touch attachments).

A rotary dial knob makes adjusting the mower cut height quick and easy:
- Provides mower cut heights in 0.25-in. (0.64-cm) increments from 1 in. (2.5 cm) to 4 in. (10.2 cm)
- Returns the mower deck to the same preset height each time it is lowered
Storage for the onboard deck-leveling gauge and the Exact Adjust tool is provided in the storage tray under the tractor’s seat:
- Exact Adjust ports on the fender deck allow for easy and accurate leveling of the mower deck for optimum mowing performance.
Deck-leveling gauge is placed at the appropriate location under the left rear, right rear, and front of the mower deck as the cut height is adjusted using the Exact Adjust tool and front draft arm adjusting nuts.
Foot-pedal lift system
Pushing with the foot to raise the mower or implement is less strenuous for many operators than using a hand-lift lever:
- The easy-to-use raised position lock operates similarly to the park brake lock.
- The foot pedal is out of the way and not likely to catch on bushes and tree limbs when mowing.
- The mower deck returns to the same preset height each time it is lowered.
Adjustable lift-assist spring
NOTE: The adjustable lift-assist spring is standard equipment on tractors with manual foot-lift system that are shipped with the 48-in. (122-cm) and 54-in. (137-cm) side-discharge mowers, and an option for tractors shipped with 42-in. (107-cm) mowers. It is a recommended option for foot-lift tractors sold with the 42-in. (107-cm) mulch mower.
- Lift-assist spring is provided on tractors shipped from the factory with a 48-in. (122-cm) or 54-in. (137-cm) side-discharge mower deck, except models with hydraulic lift, and a recommended option for tractors equipped with a 42-in. (107-cm) mulch mower to minimize lift effort.
-
A spring-assist kit is available for other models for use with front equipment.
-
-
Lift effort can be easily adjusted by turning a bolt, located on the tractor front bumper, for optimum performance, depending on the equipment used (mower, front blade, snow blower, etc.).
-
The mower will not be inadvertently locked in the raised position when mowing through ditches.
-
When installing or removing a mower or front equipment raised by the foot-lift system, spring tension may be removed from the connection points by pulling rearward on the lift pedal and raising the lift latch to hold the pedal in the rearward position.
Parking brake control
Depressing the brake pedal applies internal wet-disk brakes, which provide better reliability and longer life than external brakes, for safe stopping.
The parking brake control is conveniently located for easy access. It holds the brake pedal securely in the locked position.Electric PTO clutch is easy and convenient to use
The heavy-duty electric PTO clutch is operated with a convenient dash-mounted switch.
Heavy-duty PTO clutch
The PTO clutch is designed to operate through many on/off cycles.
RIO
Using RIO
CAUTION: Children or bystanders may be injured by rotating blades. Before traveling forward or rearward:
- Carefully check the area around the machine.
- Disengage the mower before backing up.
NOTE: Operating the mower while backing up is strongly discouraged. RIO should be used only when operating another attachment or when the operator deems it necessary to reposition the machine with the mower engaged.
- Stop forward travel. Allow attachment to run.
- Look down and behind the machine to be sure that there are no bystanders.
- Push and hold in the reverse implement switch while depressing the reverse pedal slightly.
NOTE: If the attachment stops while positioning the machine, return mower engagement (PTO) switch to off position. Repeat this procedure from the beginning. - Release the reverse implement switch and reposition the machine as the machine begins to move rearward.
- Resume forward travel. The attachment should continue operating.
- Repeat procedure to position the machine again.

4 Wheel steering nice but...
I have around 2.5 or so acres to mow. Lots of trees. Pretty flat but some undulation. The 4 wheel steering is nice but I am not sure JD should offer 4 wheel steering without power steering because after a couple hours of mowing it's hard to steer around all the trees. Also, when trying to steer while at a stop, it is very hard. Fairly minor issue. Also, I notice that when I am going through taller grass with any speed, the engine bogs down a bit. Since I plan to keep this tractor for 15-20 years, I needed more power and power steering so I used the 30 day promise and upgraded to an x394. Wow, worlds of difference. My advice for anyone who wants to save money is to not drive the power steering models...you'll upgrade on the spot. The x354 is a great tractor if you don't have tons of mowing to do or if you don't have lots of trees or obstacles. However, if that was the case, I'd have just gotten an x350 instead anyway. Hence, the reason I think the x354 is a redundant model. BTW, this is my first riding mower and I'm kicking myself for not getting one sooner...it's made mowing FUN!

Four Wheel Steering - Never going back!
I was using a JD LT166 riding mower, manufactured in 2001 and it runs like a charm. Has a 42 inch freedom mulching deck with opposing spinning blades. So why did I buy an X354? Only excuse I have - I just wanted a new mower. More on the X354 shortly. I maintain my equipment carefully. Was delighted to find out I had several friends who wanted my old mower. A sixteen year old machine and sold the mower for $1000. I was delighted. Prior to purchasing the X354 I did a ton of research. I was concerned that their new deck would not mulch as well as my old LT166. Everything I read, asked other users and checked with my dealer all said I would be pleased. The next decision was four wheel steering. And the last decision was the 42 inch deck. I bought the mower kind of end of season and had just layed a new sod lawn. I cut something like 15,000 square feet with a ton of defined planting beds and ornamental trees also with defined edging. THIS MACHINE IS A DELIGHT TO USE. I mowed my lawn maybe ten times before the really cold weather settled in and I winterized the mower. Steering is very easy. Almost feels like power steering. Ease of cutting really close to the edging is a piece of cake. Best I can tell the mulching blades work very well. The grass is cleanly cut and the mulched clippings you almost cannot see when you run your hands over the mowed lawn. And JD quality of build is obvious. I would not buy another brand. Another happy camper in MI.

A “little” disappointed
Due to the pandemic, we were not able to see in person or test drive any tractors as none were available. This was our mistake as we should have never ordered this tractor site on seen. We had an SST for more then 20 years with no issues. Ran great until this year but when we tried to have it fixed there was no one left that knew anything about it. And no parts (or very limited) available parts. So we bit the bullet and decided to order a new one. After explaining our property to the salesman and explained what we had prior in a tractor and our intentions to also add a snowblower to the purchase, he sold us this one. Boy! It is in no way as good as the old SST! The SST maneuvered better then this monstrosity which rides more like a truck (an old one) and oversteers and the blade reverse shuts off most times despite pressing the button. I just hope this thing does work in the snow otherwise I just might trade it in to another manufacturers unit even after only a little over 8 hours on it.

A Definite Upgrade!
I traded my 13-year old X300 for the X354. There are some nice improvements they made to the X354. First, the turning radius with 4 turning wheels makes it outstanding for cutting around trees and tight obstacles. The electronic dash board with fuel state, battery charge, PTO position and several essential stats makes it a piece of cake to know exactly the status of the tractor. And the optional electronic mulching feature allows me to switch between discharge and mulching at the click of a button. Definitely a great mower.

OUTSTANDING IN EVERY WAY!
I purchased this machine to replace a zero turn model from a different company and could not be happier with the results! I needed the Deere because it is more versatile and better suits my needs, but I also have a number of trees to mow around and the 4 wheel steering is just what the doctor ordered. I use the mulching option exclusively and find it is a great way to get rid of leaves in the fall and grass clippings all summer. Maintenance could not be easier and the 42 inch deck suits my needs perfectly. I went with the Deere after watching my neighbors tend to their yard with an x350... They have far fewer trees than I so the x354 made more sense and was well worth the extra investment. I highly recommend this machine!

A temperamental diva
I inherited this mower from the previous owner of my house. We both used it to mow about an acre and a half of rolling hills covered with grass. There are some tree roots and stumps hidden out there, and doesn’t take much to stop this mower in its tracks. He and I both have had to hitch up a chain and tow it off of a root that entrapped a blade. It’s only got 40 hours on the clock, and it’s already got an electrical issue. Absolutely won’t crank without a jump. Even after a new battery. Also notable: I’ve owned it for two years, and only had it running for less than 15 hours. I spend more time working on this beast than mowing with it. I would’ve ranked it lower, but when it works, it does a good/fast job. But it doesn’t work very often.

Very Good 4 Steer mower with some ergo concerns
The x354 is the 4 wheel steer version of the x350-42. Its 181/2 HP engine is very good. Ours came with the Mulch kit and is being exclusively used as a mulch deck. We had to remove the rubber chute deflector in order to fit through the gate. We have issues with the drive pedals being too close. The deck and foot brake pedals pose ergo issues for us seniors. Control panel is very good having engine speed, battery voltage, fuel and hour meter all inclusive. Control panel buttons generally good fit and finish except for cruise control which is loose. Legroom is marginal. Ride is generally OK. Deck noise is horrible. Ear defenders are a must! Deck cleanup is easy. However washout port connector is hard to remove. Comes a 4 year warranty!

Excellent tractor for my small yard
I don't have a very big yard - right around a 1/4 acre or just over but sometimes its nice just to get on a rider and get it done! This bad boy does the trick. 4 wheel steering provides more usability than most all other tractors in its class, it has such a small turning radius that I can easily do a tight circle around my vent pipe and trees in the yard.. Every maintenance area is easy to see (5 grease points/oil filter/air filter) are all in plain view to make maintaining this mower a snap. Power is decent for small to medium yards. The x350 (one under this particular model) is currently #1 on Consumer Reports so that tells the story. My neighbors all have riders but they now are admiring mine which I can appreciate - its truly a magnificent machine, and you sit on top of it like a yard king its higher up than some other riders but I dig it. Just put my little Gorilla Cart in the back and of I go for a days work in the backyard. Can't say enough about this X354. It rocks! The electronic dash is a key feature for me since you can watch your gas usage and see maintenance alerts without leaving the seat. You won't regret a buy on this one. I didn't!

best mower ever
I took delivery of my mower two weeks ago. the snow finally melted and I couldn't wait to get into the yard to suck up the remaining leaves (and play with the new mower). the four wheel steer worked like a dream. was able to get around all the landscaping without an issue. the bagging system worked great. the mower sucked up everything in the yard and put it in the bags without an issue. I did in 25 minutes what usually took 1 hour and 20 minutes with a push mower. with all the leaves I do in the fall, the bagging system will make my life substantially easier. wish I would have got it years ago

Lost that John Deere quality
“Upgraded” from a 165 to the x354. My 30+ year tractor was a beast and a tribute to the brand. The new one is plastic and after only 11 hours of use, already is looking beat. To be expected if I were working a farm, but regular use includes mowing a .75 acre lot with only 2 baby pine trees on it. Expected higher durability from this staple brand.

lOVE THIS TRACTOR! IT'S QUIET, VERY EASY TO STEER
Love this tractor! It's quiet, very easy to steer. Gets close to most edges so I don't have to do much weed eating. Back up without turning blades off. Cleans blades effortlessly with water hose connected to adapter on mower deck. Easy to blow off top of mower deck and air filter after each use. Smooth driving and very quiet. Because of the 4-wheel steer, mower deck gets close enough I don't have to do much trimming with a weed eater after I'm done.

Must have!
I Initially purchased a new x350 and I thought that was great. When it was delivered I noticed a scratch on the hood so I worked with my dealer and went in and seen the x354. Wow all I can say is this the machine to own if you have obstacles or ditches. The extra weight of the machine makes this thing a beast on hills and going around things is a piece of cake now! I would recommend spending the extra 700 bucks any day!

Solid tractor
How often do you find that a product doesn't work as advertised, and it doesn't live up to your expectations? The X354 exceeded my expectations! This is my first tractor, I'd been paying someone to cut my lawn. The X354 is easy to use, and now I get to decide when my lawn gets cut. I couldn't be happier. I'd recommend this to anyone.

Upgraded from a John Deere D 125 which I thought was a great little tractor. The X 354 is a world above in quality and handling. Great for a large yard with many obstacles. Maneuvers around them with ease.

Good tractor but key issues to consider
During my first use within 15 minutes the engine blew a valve. At first JD would only pay for a rebuild of parts, but the dealer convinced them a new engine was required. It has run flawlessly since. As mentioned by others this is not a zero turn and is limited to 24 inches circle requiring backing up. This questions the benefit for buying this over a regular tractor. Also it is extremely noisy requiring ear muffs from the gun range to minimize the noise. On the positive side it provides an excellent level mowing surface. It is very intuitive to use. In the end it is a JD and that speaks highly for the product. If you look in the neighborhood there are 3 JD's for all competitors all together.

Love It!
Perfect for my size yard - 1.5 acres. Easy to drive, plenty of power, plows through high grass effortlessly, does not slip when wet. Four wheel steering is well worth a little more in cost. Turning radius is almost a zero turn!

What an AMAZING piece of equipment!
We recently purchased a X354 to replace our well aged '04 L111 and '05 L120 tractors. The X300 series is a beast when compared to the 100-series units found at the big-box stores!! I've only put about 4 hours on it but am thoroughly impressed. The chassis feels much stronger than the 100 series. Much fewer squeaks and rattles on bumpy stuff and feels more solid all around. The 4-wheel steer is amazing!! Our back yard has dozens of pine trees and the X354 turns so tight we can now mow all the way up to the tree trunks! The steering effort is very low as long as the tires are turning - with motion, it's almost like power steering. The digital dashboard is wonderful!! It's crystal clear and easy to view and read in any lighting condition. All controls are sensibly laid out and operate easily. We purchased the 7 bushel 2-Bag Hopper Assembly to help clean up our pine-tree covered back yard. Our older L120 and L111 just couldn't pick up the pine needles and cones - and the volume of debris from these trees is astounding. The new system has EXCEEDED ALL EXPECTATIONS for bagging! The included high-lift blades pick up everything that's not rooted. Pine needles 4" deep, pine cones, small branches, dirt, rocks, previously mulched pine debris - ALL OF IT! It has brought our yard down to the bare topsoil! The biggest problem with the bagging system is there is so much vacuum, it will clog the chute very quickly if you don't go very slow. The collection bags are also greatly improved from the older L-series system. These bags remove and empty very easily. The hopper is also a massive improvement from the old style. So far, the X354 has performed beyond expectations in every way! The Kawasaki engine is a dream, the deck is extremely quiet, the bagging is amazing, and the 4-wheel steering is outstanding! If you’re looking for a great residential lawn tractor that is sturdy, versatile, and does a great job, look no further than the X300 series tractors.

Just an awesome machine. Im so glad i finally purchased a JOHN DEERE. Super smooth ride, mulch option is great. In all my 50 years of cutting grass the clippings are the size of tobacco. Great Except:::
The mulch control kit was represented as a lever that converts from mulch to bag or side discharge without tools. I went to two locations and was told the same. Only to find out that the bagger requires that the mulch baffle be removed. NOT so good for the ladies and for satisfaction. ALBEIT only two bolts it isn't as represented. Why I did not know this was because the bagger kit is new and wasn't released from John Deere until after the use and purchase of the mower. The dealer has to install in my driveway (first time they ever saw the kit FYI). Don't get me wrong. The mower is fantastic and I will most likely not bag until the leaves fall. But this need to be addressed.

top NOTCH
My first rider with a new property of 1 1/3 acres. A lot of trees to cut around and a wooded area I cleared out and will be maintaining a few paths.I would recommend a grease gun and hit those zerks as scheduled as this has a few more then the average x350. I added the brush guard after sliding into a tree and almost popping a headlight out. The tire tread is great at preventing lawn scuffs but down in the woods sometimes I wish I had something more aggressive. 1st world problems!

More in power, less in features
I purchased the X354 based on the ratings in Consumer Reports. I also bought it online. Had I gone to the dealership, I would have bought another model. The back wheels are smaller and the seat is positioned lower than those on my old model X175. I find riding on the X354 uncomfortable and difficult to switch the emergency brake on and off. Because of the size of the rear tires, they slip frequently. I am going to have to add some weights to the back. I am also getting used to not having as much area to cut with than my previous 54". Having said all that, I do believe the mower works wonderfully well and the cut is great. The X354 is also easier to maneuver.

Love the tractor, however…
I’ve had this lawn tractor for just over a month and mow twice per week. The yard looks beautiful when I’m done. My only complaint is the mower blades disengage when I push the reverse pedal. I know it’s a safety precaution, but the blades starting and stopping is an inconvenience. Can I bypass the three wire safety switch?

It's fun to mow the lawn with
I bought it last spring and used it the whole summer. I added on the mulching kit and the rear bagger. Yes, it's a pain to switch between the two, but it takes only about 15 or 20 minutes twice a year so it's not that huge of a deal to me. I bought this over a zero-turn mower because I need a tractor to haul stone and dirt and gravel with. Can't do that with a ZTR mower without shelling out the transmission, yet I didn't want to give up ZTR completely. 4 wheel steering was as close as I could get. If you trim around a telephone pole, you can almost do it without backing up. 18" (mature trees) seems to be about the minimum you can turn with this. When you turn hard, the back end wiggles a little, but you get used to it soon enough. It starts easy every time, it's quiet, it's easy to do maintenance on (get an oil filter cap wrench, though), it cleans up fast and easy, and it's a real pleasure to own. I put 100 hours on it last year and have no complaints. Oh, one thing, get a steering wheel spinner for it, John Deere makes a good one. You need this for the ultimate in maneuverability. Without a spinner, you would get tired of steering real quickly. With a spinner, it's a one hand operation. You don't need power steering, the X354 turns super easy. I spin that wheel all over the place all day long without even thinking about it. Maybe it's the spinner that makes all the difference. I love this mower. Highly recommended.

Good value and love the all wheel steering
Bought early last year and I have put 120 hours on the tractor mowing about three acres a week. Added a mulching kit. Mows well and makes turning around the numerous trees and flower beds less of a chore than with my1994 LX172. Highly recommend jumpering out the reverse switch for the PTO. Also apply electricians tape to the sides of the PTO on off switch wiring connection to keep it from wiggling off of the switch. The connection does not have a retaining clip / mechanism.

Overall great product
I want this mower about a year ago and wanted to wait that long until I did a review. I have had multiple previous John Deere mowers including X304 and an older mower LX85 which was a liquid cooled riding mower. Runs great. Very powerful. Excellent steering. I still hate having to push a button to back up if I want the blades to keep running but I realize that is a legal issue. If you are purchasing this to cut your grass it is fantastic. My yard has a lot of oak trees and picking up leaves is a nightmare. More of the leaves end up on top of the deck then under the deck. I have learned to go over and bulge first but it is a slight pain to have to put another plate on the more for mulching and then take that off. I wish there were some answer to get them over to pull these up better. Often times blows them out of the way as the deck approaches even with the high lift blade zone. Hopefully 1 day there will be an answer to this or I may have to simply purchase a leaf vacuum. Overall an excellent product..

Great product, worth every penny
I switched from a Z335 zero turn, for ease of getting on and off. I'll never go back this tractor has it all, great handling, delivers a wonderful cut, well made and is easy to service. The switch over from mulching to bagger could use a little help in the engineering area. You shouldn't have to add a remove a plate at each switch.
