Powerful V-twin engine features full-pressure lubrication for dependability and long life
A 22-hp (16.4-kW) V-twin engine has plenty of power and torque to handle tough mowing, mulching, and bagging:
- V-twin cylinder design for greater torque, lower vibration, and improved sound quality
- Electronic ignition for fast starts
- Spring-return feature to ensure the operator does not mistakenly leave the throttle lever in the choke position
- Cast-iron cylinder liners for longer engine life
- Overhead valves for excellent power and fuel economy
- Full-pressure lubrication and oil filter for cleaner oil, prolonging engine life and extending the time between oil changes
- More effective when operating the tractor on an incline
Fuel tank
- The capacity is 2.4 U.S. gal. (9.1 L).
- The fuel filler opening is conveniently located under the seat.
- Filling the tank without spilling is easy.
- A tethered fuel tank cap is more convenient.
- The sealed fuel cap helps keep vapors inside the tank.
-
Serviceability is convenient with easy-open hood
The one-piece hood opens easily to permit checking and servicing the engine:
- Important service points are located within easy reach.
- A service-interval decal is provided inside the tractor hood for convenience when servicing the tractor.
The John Deere Easy Change 30-second oil change system makes changing the engine oil easy, quick, and clean. Changing the oil is as easy as removing the old oil-filled filter and twisting on a new oil-filled filter.
The seat tilts up and out of the way to make adding fuel easy.Quick response (QR) codes link to owner information web pages
John Deere riding lawn mowers are supported by owner information web pages that include links to:
- Safety and how-to videos
- Operator’s manuals

John Deere Easy Change™ 30-second oil change system
The John Deere Easy Change 30-second oil change system makes changing the engine oil easy, quick, and clean. Changing the oil is as easy as twisting on a new oil-filled filter. Oil does not need to be drained from the engine.
The John Deere Easy Change filter is an additional engine oil reservoir. Changing the filter removes the captured contaminants and replaces about 0.8 qt (0.76 L) of engine oil.
The functionality does not stop with ease of use. The Easy Change oil system has several meaningful benefits over the traditional oil filter system of the 100 Series:- A synthetic filter material is used for more predictable filtering and longer life.
- Filtering capacity is greater than with a standard oil filter.
- More filter surface area
- More oil flow capacity
- The system has 40 percent more oil volume.
- The oil and engine run cooler.
- The oil filter valve closes whenever the engine stops, so filtered particles are captured and cannot drain back into the engine.
- The risk of spilling during oil service is greatly reduced.
- Waste oil (and new oil production) is reduced by over 1,000,000 lb (453,592.4 kg) per tractor production year.
- This system is not a compromise to just make oil changes easier—these engines pass the same John Deere expectations and rigorous testing as always.
Partly due to these improvements, it is not necessary to remove and dispose of all the oil in the engine during service.
Everyone who uses the John Deere Easy Change system saves time and avoids the mess of a traditional oil change. In the past, many 100 Series Lawn Tractor owners rarely or never got around to changing their engine oil. With the 30-second oil change, even people who previously would not consider changing the oil themselves can easily do it. The Easy Change system is a no-mess, no-fuss solution the competition cannot match.
Installation instructions are in the Operator’s Manual and in the John Deere Easy Change service part box.
Please recycle. Many local government recycling programs, authorized retailers, auto-service centers, and auto-parts stores will puncture and recycle used oil filters and oil. -

Disappointed and had to return
So, bought this fine quality entry level tractor. This is more than enough for basic grass cutting. This was purchased from Lowes with their great Military Discount (10% off). I had this delivered and they were prompt and free. Once delivered I noticed two small issues I was willing to live with, yet disappointed. The yellow seat was extremely dirty with finger prints from what I presume are from the movers. I guess gloves are not something practiced. Ok, moving on. Now if find the yellow deck scratched and gouge of paint missing from the edge at it's lowest. Disappointed, painted it and moved on. So, now the straw that broke the camels back, I opened the MowerPlus app on my phone and it asked me to scan my serial number. I found the sticker under the tractor in the front. It was barely hanging there stuck with only a small edge of the sticker. I took the sticker and placed it firmly on the large black plate where it was hanging. I looked over to the left and noticed a nice hot muffler exhaust sitting there and thought this was not a good place for this sticker. I removed the sticker to put it further away from the muffler and now it destroyed my serial number sticker with the words VOID where it was stuck. I was done. I called Lowes to come pick this up and reported this to both John Deere and the local Dealer. Local Dealer said they would give me the same discounts and a 3 year warranty vs the 2 year the Lowes offered. (John Deere only offered 2 as well from my research). I haven't made up my mind if I want to deal with John Deere or move on to another brand.

Off to a fantastic start!
I just bought my S130 yesterday after my local Lowe's offered me a great Military discount and free delivery (Thanks Lowe's, your loss Home Depot!) I'm graduating to this model from an old Craftsman with an 18hp Kohler. In all fairness, it's only been 24 hours and one cut of my property but so far I'm extremely pleased. I didn't realize how out of date my Craftsman was. I'm looking forward, with great confidence, to a long and pleasant experience with my John Deere. The only disappointment - my wife tells me it is not appropriate for me to ride around the neighborhood and show it off. : (

Owner's Manual please
I bought this mower a week ago. I finally went to use it and realized that Lowe's did not give me a owner's manual. So I thought, I will just find one online. I am shocked that I cannot find one and the operator's manual is really poor. I can't even find a diagram of the mower that explains what each button or lever does. Really amazingly ridiculous!!

excellent for price, very comfortable, total asset
although i just picked up mine yesterday from lowes, (purchased online, picked up with crewmax tundra and it fit in the back just fine with the tail gate down, and was creatively unloaded at home). Once home, i put gas in it, it fired it right up, and began to mow yard. preadjusted, it cuts great, has plenty of power, nice wide platform makes it very stable on our mostly uneven and sloped yard, and is super comfortable for the 1.7 hours that were put on via mowing, lawn chores, and just riding it to get used to how it handles and cuts. lowes did not have it ready, but that gave me a chance to hand select from the 3 available outside, (i chose the one that did not have loading marks on the anti-scalp wheels), and 3 of us loaded into truck as stated above. we did opt for the mulching plug and after some finesse, that went right in. i had not mowed since summer, and although the grass was a bit longer, the mower plowed through all grass and mulched it down to un-noticeable micro blades of cut grass. i did find a few sticks and the mower rejected them (flung across dirt driveway). RIO mode is easy and works great, cruise control is nice, and the push pull pto button is super easy. overall as of day 1, this thing is a beast and is great. also fits great in our 10X12 shed.

Disappointed
I bought this online from Lowe’s and had it delivered. Unit was dead on arrival. I had always wanted a Deere. I chose this one based on price and name. Returning to Lowe’s and going with a different brand.

So far so good.....
I just completed my 4th cut of my 1/2 acre lawn with my John Deere S130 tractor. I installed the mulch cover when I purchased it. So far I have not had any problems. It does a pretty nice job of mulching with the standard blades. I came from a 30 plus year old Honda tractor that I loved but it could not mulch. Although I'm not crazy about the gas pedal I am getting used to it. The Honda I just put in 3rd gear, no clutch and off I went. Hopefully it will give me years of trouble free service. Time will tell.

Loving it so far!
Purchased from Lowe's. Took me a while to figure out how to get it moving. There's a safety rod in the rear that you have to push in so as to engage transmission. First cut was awesome and loving all the little feature details this mower has!

JD S130 Mower
My new S130 was delivered yesterday. I checked it to be sure it had oil, and proceeded to mow my acre today. When I finished mowing, and was cleaning it up, I noticed something dripping. Opened the hood, and oil had been spewing all over. Checked dip stick and oil was out. I put some oil in the dip stick holder, since I wasn't sure what to do about the new quick change system. Can't contact JD until Monday, dealership is closed today (Saturday). Just curious if anyone else has experienced this problem. I'm sure JD will fix the oil leaking problem, just would have preferred not to have the problem.

Quality Control?
Purchased new from Lowe's. Delivery delayed by two weeks since mower wouldn't start form them. LandPro "repaired" and said it was a fuse. Mowed once, fuse blew again. Lowe's brought me a new mower. Found out after I looked over the parts manual on line the original fuse was should be 20 amp and not the 10 amp that LandPro "repaired" it with. Also note that when original was delivered, the seat was covered with dirty tape residue. I cleaned it up but you'd think it would have been a bit more presentable upon delivery. Now the new mower just delivered, the gas tank is not secured as it should be. Haven't mowed with it yet but the 30 day window is fast approaching and I have been in possession of my purchase for only 3 days....... Long story short, really need to think about any "green" equipment purchases in the future. Lowe's service and handling of my complaint was acceptable and employees exceptional given they are a big box store.
